This is at an event you&#8217;ve paid up to \u00a332 to attend in order to try different whiskies.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this ludicrous display put me in a bad mood, but I was genuinely looking forward to trying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiskybase.com\/whisky\/65915\/blair-athol-1995-hl\" target=\"_blank\">18yo Blair Athol<\/a> I was angling for. Partly because it was one of the only interesting-looking whiskies at the very disappointing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewhiskystramash.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Whisky Stramash<\/a> (I&#8217;ve heard it was much better last year, but it was distinctly mediocre in my view).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_580\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5198_2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7SOmjkCW\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-580\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-580\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5198_2-765x453.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Let me talk at you for a good 10 minutes first..&quot;\" width=\"765\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5198_2-765x453.jpg 765w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5198_2-840x497.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Let me talk at you for a good 10 minutes first.. here presenting the Laphroaig&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A zoom lens was initially needed to get close to this potential dram &#8211; perhaps it was more of a hypothetical, ethereal drink.. a metaphysical concept? &#8211;  but after a bit of perseverance (OK, I left the queue twice because I was so bored and came back later), the dram was finally poured. I was looking forward to a nice, rich and sherried Blair Athol. Oh dear. Oh deary me. Oh deary, deary me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nose<\/strong>: Reasonable sherry wafts, with an un-malty creaminess in the background.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taste<\/strong>: Oh, what&#8217;s happened here? That cream has turned into old, potentially mouldy, cream. And it&#8217;s been left inside an old, unworn trainer for a few months. I&#8217;ve never tasted a whisky like this, and the more I try it, the more of am insult that&#8217;s becoming. Very, very ridiculous syrup thing with mouldy toffee, strange creamy boiled sweets and the feeling and taste of trepidation when eating a wild plant when you&#8217;re unsure if it&#8217;s edible.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_577\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5208.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7SOmjkCW\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-577\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-577\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5208-765x574.jpg\" alt=\"At least they had a massive poster so you could see the elusive bottle\" width=\"765\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5208-765x574.jpg 765w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5208-840x630.jpg 840w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5208-285x214.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At least they had a massive poster so you could see the elusive bottle<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Finish<\/strong>: It&#8217;s like milk that might not be milk &#8211; are you *sure* that was the udder? Not unlike a banana, which you have to eat from a stranger holding it in a compromising position. A definite creamy offness. AWFUL.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9\/100<\/strong> &nbsp; (only because it didn&#8217;t smell as bad as it tasted.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_578\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5203.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-7SOmjkCW\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-578\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-578\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF5203_sm.jpg\" alt=\"I had no idea how much it was when I tasted it..\" width=\"765\" height=\"551\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">They were selling its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiskybase.com\/whisky\/54043\/blair-athol-1995-hl\" target=\"_blank\">sister cask<\/a> in the shop instead &#8211; maybe it&#8217;s better?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Just as proof I wasn&#8217;t tainted by the anger-inducing\u00a0buildup, the accompanying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiskybase.com\/whisky\/68294\/laphroaig-2002-hl\" target=\"_blank\">Laphroaig<\/a> was excellent (88\/100). Apart from a couple of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smws.co.uk\/whisky\/118.3_Self-assured_buxom_and_rewarding.html\" target=\"_blank\">over-metallic<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smws.co.uk\/whisky\/117.5_Smouldering_brooding_and_alluring.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cooleys<\/a>, this is one of the only malts I&#8217;ve genuinely struggled to drink.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just possible this is one of those &#8216;Marmite whiskies&#8217; that is so unusual it could potentially tick all the boxes of another taster. I&#8217;ve had some like that before, but this is more likely to be a crowd-disappointer than anything else, I reckon &#8211; unless you love off cream served in old trainers, that is.<\/p>\n<p>## &nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hunterlaing.com\/brands\/old-malt-cask\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hunter Laing<\/a>,&nbsp; \u00a380? &nbsp; <strong>Really?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"break\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s the longest sentence you know?
