I thought it would be a fun lockdown project to record some of my LPs to digital formats and at the same time upgrade my system from a <a href=\"https:\/\/nostalgiacentral.com\/pop-culture\/technology\/dansette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">retro one<\/a> to a higher fidelity one. If I were going purely for sound quality, I might&#8217;ve aimed for something like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rega.co.uk\/products\/planar-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rega Planar 1<\/a>, but I liked the Sony&#8217;s mix of features and looks. I could also pair it with a newly-acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/pinkfishmedia.net\/forum\/threads\/creek-cas-4040.210836\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creek 4040 S3<\/a> amplifier, bypassing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avforums.com\/threads\/pre-amp-to-connect-yamaha-r-n602-to-sony-ps-hx500-turntable.2353911\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-built<\/a> phone stage \/ preamp of the PS-HX500, an oft-mentioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avforums.com\/threads\/pre-amp-to-connect-yamaha-r-n602-to-sony-ps-hx500-turntable.2353911\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weak point<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Potential Upgrades<\/h4>\n<p>After a couple of years of use, I couldn&#8217;t help feel the sound could be improved. After researching it the main area of improvement would be <a href=\"https:\/\/forums.stevehoffman.tv\/threads\/tt-sony-ps-hx500-default-cartridge-replacement.801922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replacing the cartridge<\/a>: &#8220;<em>that original cartridge is the Audio-Technica AT3600L, which can be found for as little as $11 on eBay shipped directly from China<\/em>&#8220;. That thread runs through some other potential upgrades (with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tapeheads.net\/showthread.php?p=775427944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more here<\/a>), but the cartridge remains the most agreed-upon &#8211; it also has the benefit of being an upgrade that can be carried over to any future turntables.<\/p>\n<h4>Which Cartridge?<\/h4>\n<p>I found <a href=\"https:\/\/dougieboom.com\/2020\/11\/09\/how-to-replace-the-sony-ps-hx500-stock-cartridge-with-the-nagaoka-mp-110\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this guide from Dougie Boom<\/a> really useful &#8211; it not only breaks down the necessary steps in performing the upgrade, but details some potential cartridge options and why they would or wouldn&#8217;t be suitable. But with &#8220;<em>patience and dexterity<\/em>&#8220;, the job could be done.<\/p>\n<h4>Cartridge Replacement<\/h4>\n<h5 style=\"padding-top:0; font-style:italic;\">Out with the old, in with the new&#8230;<\/h5>\n<p>To install the new cartridge, I followed Dougie&#8217;s detailed tutorial, but I&#8217;ve summarised the key steps below:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>&nbsp; Clamp down the turntable arm so it doesn\u2019t move during installation<\/li>\n<li>&nbsp; Remove the wires from old cartridge first, grabbing only the metal part with angled needle nose pliers<\/li>\n<li>&nbsp; Detach the old cartridge by unscrewing the screws on top of the headshell, saving all the screws and washers<\/li>\n<li>&nbsp; Attach the new cartridge to the headshell with the screws, then attach the wires to their perspective colours<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A couple of additional notes: firstly, the connectors on the stock cartridge aren&#8217;t colour coded, but the wires are. The best method I could work out was to first secure the new cartridge roughly in place using electrical tape, making sure the screw holes aren&#8217;t covered. Then a thin piece of metal could be used as a little tray for the nut (I used a craft knife) &#8211; with a few attempts, this technique yielded success. I actually can&#8217;t think of many other ways it could be done!<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"padding-top:0; font-style:italic;\">Align, Adjust&#8230; Calibrate!<\/h5>\n<p>Once the new cartridge is (roughly) in place, it needs to be fine-tuned. After all, there&#8217;s no point fitting something of this standard without making sure it&#8217;s set up correctly. The Goldring 1006 suggests <strong>1.75g<\/strong>, and I hit that on the nose. It&#8217;s not always obvious in downforce tutorials, but what you&#8217;re looking to do is adjust your counter weight at the other end of the tone arm until the force gauge matches the suggested weight. I also took off the rubber mat to roughly cancel out the height of the gauge itself. I needed to adjust the whole unit a little, whilst checking the belt is flush to the underside will help prevent any vertical fluctuations (&#8216;the wobbles&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p>For the calibrating tasks, I found these 3 online tutorials the simplest and most aligned to the tuning kit I had. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SDrTAxv2-SQ&#038;list=PLta7RZQcbpaaZSdw4MYgitQE0dXK9XArH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">playlist<\/a> embedded below has tutorials on 1) horizontal (protractor) alignment, 2) vertical (azimuth) alignment and 3) stylus force gauging, in that order. <u>Hit the &#8220;1\/3&#8221; button<\/u> in the top right to choose between them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top:25px;\">\n<div style=\"width:100%; max-width:640px;\">\n<div style=\"position: relative; padding-bottom: 52.3%; \/* 16:9 *\/ padding-top: 25px; height: 0;\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%;  height: 100%; width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/videoseries?list=PLta7RZQcbpaaZSdw4MYgitQE0dXK9XArH\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4 style=\"padding-top:60px;\">Conclusions<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Was it easy to do?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes, fiddly but technically straightforward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does it sound any better?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes, definitely a more detailed sound, particularly in the higher end. Cymbals and snares sound amazing!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it worth doing?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes, if you are set on upgrading your Sony PS-HX500 and think the cost is worth the improved sound. If your only goal is a better-sounding turntable setup, then that money would be better spent on a more &#8216;audiophile&#8217;-spec turntable.
