{"id":1368,"date":"2016-11-24T15:53:28","date_gmt":"2016-11-24T15:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/?p=1368"},"modified":"2016-12-02T17:51:47","modified_gmt":"2016-12-02T17:51:47","slug":"retropie-raspberry-pi-3-retro-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/research\/retropie\/","title":{"rendered":"RetroPie on a Raspberry Pi 3 = Retro Games!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>document.getElementById('menu-item-102').className += \" current-menu-item current_page_item\";<\/script><br \/>\nAfter the recent release of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendo.co.uk\/Misc-\/Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Nintendo-Entertainment-System\/Nintendo-Classic-Mini-Nintendo-Entertainment-System-1124287.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mini NES<\/a>, I came across an article on building a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pocket-lint.com\/news\/137374-can-t-buy-a-nes-classic-mini-how-to-build-your-own-retro-console-for-just-50\" target=\"_blank\">better system for the same price<\/a>, with a Raspberry Pi 3 running RetroPie OS.<\/p>\n<p>I quite fancied a little weekend project and none of my old consoles connect to my TV any more, plus I didn&#8217;t mind getting my hands on a Raspberry Pi! So I bought the bits and a week later set about building my mini console*.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size:11px; color:grey;\">*OK, it&#8217;s just a tiny computer running console emulators via a GUI, but it should still bring back that 80s\/90s console magic!<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1371\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0534_2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1371\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-Jv76DfGm\" data-rl_title=\"Raspberry Pi - Setup\" data-rl_caption=\"Raspberry Pi - Setup\" title=\"Raspberry Pi - Setup\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1371\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0534_2-765x547.jpg\" alt=\"Raspberry Pi - Setup\" width=\"765\" height=\"547\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1371\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0534_2-765x547.jpg 765w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0534_2-768x549.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0534_2-840x601.jpg 840w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0534_2.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1371\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">All the bits and pieces needed &#8211; it&#8217;s not much!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As I basically followed the above guide pretty much verbatim, I&#8217;ll <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pocket-lint.com\/news\/137374-can-t-buy-a-nes-classic-mini-how-to-build-your-own-retro-console-for-just-50\" target=\"_blank\">link to it again<\/a> as well as keep a backup copy <a href=\"docs\/pocketlint_retropie_instructions.zip\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. There are obviously <a href=\"https:\/\/gameroomsolutions.com\/raspberry-pi-3-retropie-setup-easy-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\">other similar guides<\/a> too &#8211; this one has a nice basic glossary at the top so you know what the rest of this article is talking about!<\/p>\n<p>When I bought my Raspberry Pi, I added a heatsink for \u00a31. This isn&#8217;t strictly necessary (you can buy a fan too), but I wasn&#8217;t sure what I&#8217;d use the Pi for in the future, so better safe than sorry. Now we need to load the <a href=\"https:\/\/retropie.org.uk\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\">Retropie OS<\/a> onto the Pi itself. This is a potential sticking point as you&#8217;ll need to download Retropie from another connected device onto a MicroSD card, which are natively read only by phones really. This is done with a simple piece of software called <a href=\"https:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/win32diskimager\/\" target=\"_blank\">Win32DiskImager<\/a> (on Windows, at any rate). Phew! Power comes from a MicroUSB cable, which I had plenty of, plugged into the mains. Switch it on (and connect to a HDMI monitor) and you can watch as RetroPie is installed. It doesn&#8217;t take long (we&#8217;re less than 20 mins into the project here), and you get a nice screen full of success:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1376\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0544_2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1376\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-Jv76DfGm\" data-rl_title=\"RetroPie - Launch\" data-rl_caption=\"RetroPie - Launch\" title=\"RetroPie - Launch\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1376\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0544_2-765x498.jpg\" alt=\"RetroPie - Launch\" width=\"765\" height=\"498\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1376\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0544_2-765x498.jpg 765w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0544_2-768x500.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0544_2-840x547.jpg 840w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DSCF0544_2.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The launch screen is always a nice result!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>OK, that was easy! Now you&#8217;ll see EmulationStation load up and once you plug in your controller, you&#8217;ll be asked to map the buttons to it. Then you&#8217;ll want to follow the guide to log in to wifi (or just plug in an ethernet cable), as this makes loading ROMs much easier. I ignored the bit about setting up a USB stick and loading ROMs that way, as once you&#8217;ve set up wifi your Pi and its contents will be visible over your network. In total, it was only 30 minutes from starting the project to playing games, which is pretty impressive. But, there are a few little niggles that took a bit longer to work out:<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, I had no idea how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/raspberry_pi\/comments\/2a3big\/retropie_21_exit_game_with_controller\/\" target=\"_blank\">exit a game<\/a> using the controller and I hadn&#8217;t a clue about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RetroPie\/comments\/2jg2xj\/saving_games_in_retropie\/\" target=\"_blank\">saving games<\/a> either. So it was pretty handy when I stumbled across <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/RetroPie\/RetroPie-Setup\/wiki\/First-Installation#controller-configurations\" target=\"_blank\">this guide<\/a>, which gives answers to both those questions and more (just scroll down a bit to find the section pictured below):<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1387\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1387\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/hotkeys-765x498.jpg\" alt=\"RetroPie - Controller Hotkeys\" width=\"765\" height=\"498\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1387\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RetroPie &#8211; Controller Hotkeys<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One thing that&#8217;s important to explain here is the difference between saving games and saving states. The hotkeys above will save a snapshot of each game without using the in-game saving features some games have. So when I was playing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonic_%26_Knuckles\" target=\"_blank\">Sonic &#038; Knuckles<\/a> for example, the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o-Cl1fdjcOI\" target=\"_blank\">save slots<\/a>&#8216; were blank, but I had a saved state to load using the hotkeys. This is fine &#8211; in fact, I couldn&#8217;t find out a way to save using the in-game system, <a href=\"http:\/\/nickbartlett.com\/retropie-emulationstation-not-saving-game-progress\/\" target=\"_blank\">despite trying<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The slight niggle with the save state system, is that save (select+right shoulder) and load (select+left shoulder) are easily confusable. Loading your initial state after making lots of progress is very frustrating indeed! But you can configure RetroArch to automatically save states on exit, or load states on start, or both. Let&#8217;s see how to do that, then I&#8217;ll tell you why it&#8217;s a bad idea.<\/p>\n<p>You can edit all sorts of settings via the RetroArch <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/retropie\/retropie-setup\/wiki\/Configuration-Editor\" target=\"_blank\">configuration editor<\/a>, but it&#8217;s a bit of a fiddle and you need a keyboard. The last two options are related to the save state feature, which is what we want. However, I found having these on was a bit buggy and didn&#8217;t always work how I expected, so I eventually turned them off again and just tried to remember that select+left shoulder = load. L=L.
