It wasn&#8217;t just that they were great quality whiskies in their own right, but in tandem, they showed each other off as prime examples of their style. Both from islands, both at their peak. I&#8217;m pretty sure David Lynch <a href=\"http:\/\/welcometotwinpeaks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/owl-cave-map.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-JCW8eO49\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\">sought inspiration<\/a> from these whiskies from the future, because he&#8217;s the kind of guy who rolls like that.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2195_2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-JCW8eO49\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-119\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2195_2.jpg\" alt=\"SMWS Karuizawa 132.4 and Kilchoman 129.1\" width=\"765\" height=\"581\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">They looked pretty amazing together, these two..<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>I just found this bottle stashed in the cupboard, and thought I&#8217;d open it for the bar<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After asking if there was anything interesting at the bar, we were told they&#8217;d just opened a bottle of Kilchoman 129.1 &#8211; a bottle that sold out almost immediately upon release &#8211; and were selling it for under a tenner a dram, &#8220;so people could get the chance to taste it&#8221;. This bottle was supposedly found unexpectedly languishing in a cupboard, although months later this story lost some credibility when the guy admitted his weaving skills were perhaps directed towards the medium of tales that night. Still&#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2185.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-JCW8eO49\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-118\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2185.jpg\" alt=\"SMWS Karuizawa 132.4\" width=\"765\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2185.jpg 4000w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2185-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2185-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2185-285x214.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s a decent refractor, this Karuizawa.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That photo above is one of my favourites &#8211; it just makes me want to be at that exact moment again. It even has paintings inside it!<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiskybase.com\/whisky\/50761\/karuizawa-1996-smws-1324\" target=\"_blank\">Karuizawa<\/a> was just shy of the heights of Japanese whisky I&#8217;ve tried, but tried almost on the same spot as the Hanyu 131.2, which I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/sswc.org.uk\/sshhh\/smws_131.2_hanyu_13yo.php\" target=\"_blank\">previously reviewed on my &#8216;sshhh!&#8217; site<\/a>. It was full of those earthy flavours Karuizawa seems to give in abundance: mushrooms, bark, the floor of a wood and plenty of your Japanese Grandad&#8217;s shed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiskybase.com\/whisky\/34299\/kilchoman-2006-smws-1291\" target=\"_blank\">Kilchoman<\/a>\u00a0was just amazing, the best Kilchoman I&#8217;ve had.\u00a0When it was released it had a decent age for the distillery at the time (5yo) and had plenty of buzz. I remember hearing it was coming out, but not wanting a bottle. I wish past-me could re-evaluate his life choices! It had such a great cask behind it and such strength &#8211; both in alcohol and complexity. It was also everything the Karuizawa wasn&#8217;t &#8211; clean, crisp, attacking, with a large dose of classy peat.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What&#8217;s yours like? Oh wow..<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We both said that. It&#8217;s good when you can share and both are equally good. Not only that, but there was a whole lot of tasty in the cask-ends cabinet&#8230; perhaps for another visit!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_120\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2198.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-JCW8eO49\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-120\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2198.jpg\" alt=\"SMWS Tormore 105.12 and Yoichi 116.15\" width=\"765\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2198.jpg 4000w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2198-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2198-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2198-285x214.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">That&#8217;s a 25yo Yoichi Mizunara cask in the cupboard&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As we were enjoying these offerings from the Gods of Japan and Islay, it got my mind wandering.. perhaps these delicious whiskies were presented as some kind of demonic offering from the demons of those lands?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yotsuya_Kaidan\" target=\"_blank\">Oiwa<\/a> was playing tricks with my mind. I feel this quote is best accompanied without explanation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Her ghostly, deformed face appeared everywhere to haunt Iemon. It even appeared in place of his new bride\u2019s face, which caused Iemon to accidentally behead her.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_548\" style=\"width: 774px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/oiwa.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-JCW8eO49\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-548\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-548\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/oiwa_sm.jpg\" alt=\"Oiwa was tormenting my mind...\" width=\"764\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-548\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oiwa was tormenting my mind&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And on the side of Islay, let me present <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Godred_Crovan\" target=\"_blank\">Godren Crovan<\/a> and his struggle with Islay&#8217;s demons:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At one time, Islay was being harassed by a wild, fierce dragon which had its den near Ballygrant, in the north of Islay. It was said that, because the dragon had attacked almost all the islanders, nothing could be seen on the island except the smoke rising from the three single households left unscathed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>OK, that legend comes from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowmore.com\/news\/godred-crovan\/\" target=\"_blank\">guys and gals at Bowmore<\/a>, but it still makes you think.. (mostly making you think what weird people brand managers are..)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_550\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/godred_crovan.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-JCW8eO49\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-550\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-550\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/godred_crovan_sm-765x370.jpg\" alt=\"...and I was channelling Godred Crovan's demons\" width=\"765\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8230;and I was channelling Godred Crovan&#8217;s demons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And now on to the light shade. It&#8217;s the world&#8217;s worst light shade. It&#8217;s a &#8220;designer&#8221; one, at that, and it&#8217;s about 2m wide.\u00a0Apparently just changing a bulb takes two men, a ladder and whole heap of time. It&#8217;s the chandelier of the &#8216;fuck it&#8217; generation- I&#8217;m not even sure if this photo does its horrors justice..<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_117\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2184.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-JCW8eO49\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-117\" src=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2184.jpg\" alt=\"'designer' lamp\" width=\"765\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2184.jpg 4000w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2184-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2184-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.meiotic.co.uk\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSCF2184-285x214.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the worst designer lamp I&#8217;ve ever seen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But it wasn&#8217;t about the light shade, or the demonic torment, it was about two delicious drams. Two whiskies that will be astronomic in price right now and jolly hard to find. It&#8217;s good to still be able to taste such quality at a vaguely affordable price.
